Pandora was founded in 1982 in Copenhagen, Denmark, by goldsmith Per Enevoldsen and his wife Winnie. The brand popularised affordable luxury jewelry with its customizable charm bracelet system, which became a global phenomenon in the 2000s. Today Pandora is the world's largest jewelry brand by volume, known for accessible pricing, extensive retail presence, and a wide range of charms, rings, and earrings.

Pandora jewelry is stamped with the brand name 'PANDORA' in capital letters along with a metal purity mark and a three-letter hallmark 'ALE,' which are the initials of the company founder's father, Algot Enevoldsen. Sterling silver pieces are marked 'S925 ALE,' gold pieces carry 'G585 ALE' for 14K gold, and Pandora Rose (their proprietary pink-toned metal) is marked 'PANDORA ROSE' with the relevant alloy stamp.

Since 2011, Pandora has introduced additional stamps on certain collections. Some newer pieces carry 'ALE MET' to indicate the use of Pandora's proprietary metal blends. The stamps are typically very small and located on the interior of rings, on charm posts, or on clasp mechanisms. A magnifying loupe is often needed to read them clearly.

Every authentic Pandora piece should carry the 'ALE' hallmark alongside the metal purity stamp. On charms, look for the stamp on the interior of the charm body or on the threaded core. On rings, it appears on the inner band. The 'S925' mark confirms sterling silver, while 'G585' confirms 14K gold. The Pandora crown logo may also be present on newer pieces.

Pandora's finish quality is consistent across their product line. Settings should be clean, enamel work should be smooth without bubbles or chips, and threaded charms should screw onto bracelets without resistance. Counterfeit Pandora is widespread due to the brand's popularity. Fakes often lack the 'ALE' mark, have uneven threading, show rough or bubbly enamel, and feel lighter than genuine pieces.
