What Does 916 Mean on Gold?

The number 916 expresses 22 karat gold in millesimal fineness: 22/24 equals 0.9167, so the alloy is 91.6% pure gold with about 8.4% other metals, usually copper and silver. This small alloy fraction hardens the metal just enough to be workable while keeping the deep, saturated yellow color that pure gold is prized for.

The 916 standard dominates jewelry traditions in India, the Gulf states, and much of South and Southeast Asia, where gold jewelry serves as both adornment and a store of family wealth. Wedding jewelry, bangles, and temple-style pieces are overwhelmingly made in 22K because the high purity keeps the piece close to bullion value — it can be sold or exchanged by weight at any gold dealer with minimal loss.

In India, the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) administers a legal hallmarking scheme, and hallmarking became mandatory for most gold jewelry sales in phases beginning in June 2021. A current BIS hallmark has three components: the triangular BIS logo, the purity mark '22K916', and a six-character alphanumeric HUID code unique to the piece. Seeing that full set is strong evidence of tested 91.6% gold.

The trade-off for all that purity is softness. 22K gold scratches, dents, and bends more easily than 18K or 14K, so it is better suited to necklaces, earrings, and occasion wear than to rings worn daily. Prong-set gemstones are also less secure in such soft metal.

On bangles, the marks are usually struck on the inner surface. Chains and necklaces carry them on the clasp or an attached tag, earrings on the post, and pendants on the back or the bail. Indian pieces hallmarked since 2021 should show the BIS triangle, '22K916', and the six-character HUID together — often inside a bangle or on a clasp tab, and small enough to need a loupe.

Older or non-Indian pieces may show just '916', '22K', or '22C' without the BIS components.
