Silver Plate vs. Sterling: How to Tell the Difference

Sterling silver is solid 92.5% silver all the way through; silver plate is a base metal with a silver coating a few microns thick. The marks usually settle the question in under a minute — 925 or STERLING means solid, EPNS or A1 means plated. Work through the steps below in order and stop at the first one that gives you a clear answer.

Step 1: Look for a fineness mark

Check the piece for a purity number or the word sterling. Any of these indicates solid silver:

  • 925 — sterling silver, 92.5% pure. The international standard.
  • 958 — Britannia silver, a higher British standard.
  • STERLING or STER — the same 92.5% claim, spelled out. Common on American pieces.
  • 800 or 900 — lower-purity continental and coin silver, still solid.

Step 2: Look for plate marks

Plated pieces usually announce themselves, though in abbreviations that were more familiar in 1900 than today:

  • EPNS — electroplated nickel silver. The most common plate mark on flatware.
  • EPBM — electroplated Britannia metal, a plated pewter-type alloy.
  • A1 — a plating-quality grade, often beside EPNS. Not a silver mark.
  • SILVER PLATE, PLATE, or EP — plating stated outright.
  • Quadruple plate / triple plate — American marketing terms for heavier electroplate, common on 19th-century hollowware.

Any of these means the piece is plated, whatever else is stamped beside them. If you find neither fineness nor plate marks, move to the symbols.

Step 3: Check for British hallmarks

A row of small pictorial stamps — a walking lion, a leopard’s head or anchor, a letter in a shield — indicates the piece was assayed in the United Kingdom. The lion passant in particular was only struck on tested sterling silver, which makes a genuine British hallmark stronger evidence than a bare 925 stamp.

Step 4: Read the physical clues

Unmarked pieces still leave evidence:

  • Wear-through: the most reliable clue. On plate, the coating wears off at high points — spoon-bowl backs, fork tines, tray edges, embossed decoration — exposing brassy yellow or coppery pink base metal. Solid silver stays silver-gray no matter how worn.
  • Color: sterling has a slightly warm, soft white color; nickel-based plate reads colder and grayer, especially side by side.
  • Weight and sound: silver is dense and rings with a clear sustained tone when tapped; plated base metals often sound duller. This is suggestive, not conclusive.
  • Seams and rolled edges: plated hollowware sometimes shows base metal at seams, rims, and solder joints where the plating is thinnest.

Step 5: Ignore the magnet test

The magnet test is the most repeated piece of advice on this subject and the least useful. Silver is not magnetic — but neither are copper, brass, nor the nickel-silver alloy under most plating. A piece that ignores a magnet could be sterling or could be plated brass; the test cannot tell them apart.

The only thing a magnet establishes is that a strongly attracted piece has a steel or iron core, which rules out solid silver. Treat “passes the magnet test” in a listing as marketing, not evidence.

Step 6: When to get a professional test

If the marks are absent or ambiguous and the piece might be valuable, have it tested. Two options:

  • XRF (X-ray fluorescence): a non-destructive scan that reads the surface alloy in seconds. Many jewelers and bullion dealers offer it free or for a small fee. Note that XRF reads the surface, so on thick plate a jeweler may also test a filed spot or an inconspicuous edge.
  • Acid test: a drop of testing acid on a small scratch shows whether silver is present below the surface. Slightly invasive, so it is done on a hidden spot — and best left to a professional on anything you care about.

For inherited sets or larger collections, a professional appraisal is worth the cost before selling anything for scrap.

Frequently asked questions

Is silver plate worth anything?

Rarely for its metal — the silver layer on electroplate is typically only a few microns thick, so the recoverable silver is worth pennies. Value in silver plate comes from other factors: maker (early Sheffield plate and pieces by Elkington or Christofle have collector markets), age, condition, and decorative appeal. A Victorian silver-plated tea set may sell for its craftsmanship, but a scrap dealer will not buy it for melt.

Why doesn't the magnet test work on silver?

Because neither side of the comparison is magnetic. Sterling silver is not attracted to a magnet — but neither are copper, brass, or nickel silver, the base metals most commonly used under silver plating. A magnet only tells you a piece is not steel or iron. Sellers sometimes present 'passes the magnet test' as proof of sterling; it proves nothing of the kind. Marks, wear patterns, and professional testing are what actually distinguish the two.

My piece just says 'SILVER' — is that sterling?

Not necessarily. On its own, the word silver is ambiguous: it can appear on continental pieces of various purities, on nickel silver (which contains no silver at all), and in plating phrases like 'silver on copper'. Look for a fineness number (925, 800, 900, 958) or the word STERLING to confirm solid silver, and for EPNS, EPBM, or PLATE to confirm plating. If neither appears, treat the piece as unverified until it is tested.

Can a piece have hallmarks and still be plated?

British-style hallmarks with a lion passant were only struck on assayed solid sterling — but plate makers imitated the look. Victorian electroplate often carries rows of small pseudo-hallmark stamps (maker initials, crowns, and symbols) deliberately arranged to resemble assay marks. The tell is what is missing: no lion passant, no standard fineness mark, and often the letters EP hidden among the symbols. When in doubt, compare against a genuine UK hallmark reference before assuming a struck row of symbols means sterling.
