What Does S925 Mean on Jewelry?

S925 is a fineness mark indicating sterling silver: 92.5% pure silver alloyed with 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The letter S is a prefix for 'silver' or 'sterling,' and it does not change the meaning of the number. A piece stamped S925 should contain exactly the same silver content as one stamped 925, .925, or 'Sterling.'

The S925 format is particularly associated with jewelry manufactured in China, where it is the standard way factories mark sterling silver for export and domestic sale. Seeing S925 does not by itself tell you where a piece was made, but it is a reasonable indicator of relatively recent, mass-produced manufacture rather than antique or hallmarked work. European and American makers more often use plain 925 or the word 'Sterling.'

An S925 stamp is a manufacturer's claim, not an independent certification. Unlike a British hallmark, which is applied by an assay office after testing, an S925 mark is struck by whoever made the piece. Most S925 jewelry is genuine sterling, but counterfeit stamps do appear on plated base metal, so the mark alone is not proof.

In terms of value and care, treat S925 exactly like any sterling silver. It will tarnish gradually through contact with air and sulfur compounds, it responds well to gentle polishing, and its melt value depends on weight and the current silver price. If a piece behaves oddly — no tarnish ever, magnetic attraction, flaking — have it tested by a jeweler.

On rings, S925 is stamped on the inside of the band. On necklaces and bracelets, check the clasp, the small tag or jump ring beside the clasp, or a flattened link near the closure. Earrings usually carry the mark on the post or the back of the setting.

The stamp is often tiny and may need a loupe to read. Variations include 'S 925', '.S925', and '925S', all indicating the same standard.
